Analytical Essays: Ask Students to Express Good Insights Clearly

Analytical essays are one of the staples of expository writing. The analytical essay form develops your ability to think, express, and argue your stance. It demonstrates to the instructor that you have understood either the item, some technique of analysis, or the mechanics of writing clearly. Preparation and careful organization will be your salvation in producing a successful analytical essay.

What are analytical essays and why on earth do we have to write them?

This is a formal essay, analyzing, or, literally, breaking down, a complex "something" into its simplest elements. The Greek root means to loosen or break apart. The potential ‘somethings’, your professor asks you to analyze, somehow, could include:

  • literature/arts,
  • situation/event,
  • relationship,
  • Ideology.

An analytical essay forces you to:

  • read,
  • examine,
  • contemplate, "something" very closely and objectively. Then, this expository form requires that you.
  • make an assertion
  • support it:
    • clearly
    • persuasively

Such skills are crucial for all fields, whether in

  • science,
  • business,
  • political/humanitarian leadership.

These skills are particularly vital for those students with limited experience in generating an original, personal assertion (not necessarily from an authoritative source), and arguing to support it.

No gloss, cheat sheet, or published notes (however helpful) can substitute for your eyes/ears/brain being applied to the careful reading/examination of the item/issue.

  • What do you see/hear/feel?
  • What element(s) or characteristic(s) of the "something" causes you see/hear/feel this?
  • Your first impression often can generate a sound thesis statement.
  • Push that first impression a bit farther – take a risk.
  • Express it initially as an observation, then as a question, and then finally as a thesis,e.g.,:
    • Observation: "I observe that Juliet initiates all the suggesting of marriage in Romeo and Juliet."
    • Question: What function does Juliet’s proactive encouragement of marriage fulfill?”
    • Possible thesis: “Juliet’s marked forwardness fulfills an important function in the play: by launching the story towards its denouement, by contrasting dramatically with Rosaline’s extreme chastity, and by demonstrating the lovers’ star-crossed status via highlighting their attraction’s power.”
    • The introduction summarizes your supporting points in several sentences.

Develop with greater detail and evidence each point.

  • Provide examples,
  • Connect them unambiguously to your thesis.
  • Try for at least three, to fit the ancient Greek rhetorical ideal.

Conclude by restating and summarizing in different words.
